Knowledge and Application of Knowledge is Power

It's totally cliche, but there is a wisdom in the saying, "Knowledge is Power."

I had a trainer once tell me: "You won't learn anything in the training room. The real knowledge is outside of the training room." Instead of learning anything in the training room, he just left us to mingle with the rest of the trainees and chat. Now what he said is true to some point, but one has to realize that without the knowledge, how will you expect to go outside and apply anything? What exactly will the person apply? Application of knowledge will only apply once the trainee will take the initiative to learn on his/her own.

Take for example, a call center agent will take in calls. Do you believe that that agent will be able to give his/her best if he/she lacked the knowledge? "Hello Ma'm/Sir this is ___, How can I help you today?" This call center agent may not have anything to apply if they lack the knowledge regarding the purpose of the tools in their system and what path of resolution to take - in short, they lack the Knowledge. In order to give their best, that agent needs to prep himself/herself up for success by having the willingness to learn more about their chosen field or industry. There is still power in Knowledge.

Now the wisdom that my trainer did mention about Real Knowledge being found outside of the training room is actually pretty spot on as well. First of all, you will be more aware if the trainee is indeed interested in what he/she is learning, and if he/she is interested they won't have to waste time teaching the rest. Second of all, once that trainee gathered up all the information and did some further study or what they like to call "going the extra mile," they will be able to apply it and use it in their field successfully.

I also once had a member in my organization complain to me about the ineffectiveness of our training tools. I then took the liberty to take a look at his Facebook pages and actions. I found out that he was learning from a different person and disregarding ALL training tools and advice given by our Team Leader. "Did you watch the training tools provided already?" I asked. He said "yes." To which I replied, "Then why aren't you using them?" "Because there is a better way."

Now this is where I'll add the Third part. Many people like to make their own paths. You gotta admit that sometimes there are somethings that you see that others don't see, that's why making our own paths seem to be the best route for us. I admit that I also like building my own path. But I build it after I've learned more, not while I'm learning. That's why my trainer's wisdom regarding Knowledge outside of the training room will also show the attitude of the trainee inside the training room. Is the trainee's attitude one that is positive or negative? Is he/she one that is good to work with or not?

There are different kinds of trainees. There are those that have a good learning and listening attitude, willing to improve in areas they lack. There are one that thinks they know it all and are smarter than the rest - even after being proved wrong they are still right in their own minds. Then of course there are those that are just THERE with vague and silly reasons for being in the training room - lost souls. Being a trainer, you will be able to spot the one that is most willing to be trained instead.

It's easier to teach a dumb person with a good attitude than it is to teach a stupid person or a person with a bad attitude. A person that is dumb can still learn because his/her knowledge cup is always empty and ready to take in new knowledge. A person with a bad attitude is hard to teach because his/her knowledge cup is full and doesn't need the knowledge of others save for their own.
